British Punk/1970s, Jamie Reid & Barney Bubbles
British Post Punk/1980s, Malcolm Garrett & Peter Saville
90s Post Modernism, Neville Brody & The Face magazine
David Carson, the Grunge aesthetic

I think that the 1970's - 1990's is the most inspirational era of graphic design for my initial ideas. I particularly like this era because of everything that surrounds it ,specifically the music culture, fashion and just general popular culture of that time. After researching particular graphic designers of this time i found some encouraging styles that i want to recreate myself when taking into consideration the brief we were given.
some of the designers that i liked the work of the most were..

70's Punk
Jamie Reid:
I had previously researched Jamie Reid during my second year of A level Photography. I particularly like his work collaborating with the Sex Pistols. I liked the controversy behind it and i thought that the use  and mix of styes was innovative. i enjoyed the use of collaging and contrast between the use of and absence of colour. i also really like the fact that his work isn't neat and precise, i like the messy and handmade aesthetic.

80's Post Punk
Malcolm Garret:
A lot like most of the graphic artists from this era colour is a predominant feature in his designs. He often uses really bright and bold colours contrasted with complimentary colours that initially seem jarring to the eye but end up working quite well. Again he touches on collaging as a mode of style and uses geometric lines and shapes to create drawings and effects.

Peter Saville:
While Peter Savilles work isn't exactly the sort of style that i am trying to achieve in my final project, i still like his designs and will take some elements from it. One of his designs is probably one of the most iconic and recognisable from this era which is the Album Art for Joy Division's Album 'Unknown Pleasures'. This design is a timeless piece of work that will always be relevant, it is still such an iconic design to this date, hence why i find it so inspirational. The elements of Saville's work that i take inspiration from is his line work. His use of simple colours and the mutation and distortion of a simple line is rather interesting and effective.

90's Post Modernism
Neville Brody(& The Face Magazine)
Brody's  Work is similar to David Carsons in the use of typography and lettering and his use of colour. I find that i like his work and relate his style to my intentions for my final brief. The way he uses lettering sizes and position to create an almost confusing poster is something that i'd like to try and adopt in my own work. I really like the way in which he incorporates photographs into his posters, as an avid photographer this is something that i want to do in my own posters. i think that the tone of his work is subtle and yet really quite obvious which is a juxtaposition that i find fascinating. The High contrast of black and white and then the occasional injection of bold colour like Red in the 'Grip' & 'Bounce' poster is really effective in making a statement and bringing attention to the work. I am really interested i his work in collaboration with the face magazine. I really like the aesthetic of magazines and Zines, especially when they have a handmade kind of aesthetic with the use of paints, sketches or images. Much like Brody's Designs in The Face magazine, Again this work fits well into my 'messy' Aesthetic.

The Face Magazine:
As previously stated magazines and Zines are particularly inspirational. They are something that i read and come into contact with often so they play a large role in how i want my final project to look like. I have already made my own poster paying homage to The Face & I-D Magazine. I really like these magazine covers as i like the way they include and make use of the photographs and the way in which they have created a solid , distinctive and recognisable brand.

The Grunge Aesthetic
David Carson:
David Carson is someone else who i have researched in previous years and have always been a fan of his work and style. His work is the complete embodiment of the 'Messy' Aesthetic i want to create in my own work. He also has a strong use of text and uses subtle and sometimes muted colour. something in which i am in favour of. I particularly like his 'Ray Gunn' work and his designs for 'Blah Blah' Magazine. I think that that is what i would like to try and create in my final brief.
