Session 2:
Week 2:
Notes:
This week we focused primarily on Typefaces. We watched a Documentary called Helvetica(Gary Hustwit,2007).This documentary was much more interesting than it initially seems. The film focused on the use of Helvetica in the graphics industry along with the working everyday world. It provides a detailed conversation about the uses and its popularity and a general response to the Typeface from different re-known graphic designers. Hustwits Documentary helped me to understand the mass use of this font while informing me on its impact of typefaces in general. I now know how important it is to use the correct font for a specific aesthetic and that there are some fonts that generally are used for specific looks and achievements.
Workshop:
A few members from the class gave presentations on Modernism, The Bauhaus & Maholy Nagy and Late Modernism & Saul Bass, poster and title design. These presentations were very informative and were useful in helping me understand these specific styles and aesthetics within this time period. Personally i am not a huge fan of these styles and i will not be creating my work with them in mind however i do find some inspiration in parts of these creatives works.
These particular images are ones that i find inspirational in some way. iI like the sue of colour in both Maholy Nagy and Saul Bass' work and i find the use of shape facisnating, i like that the both the use of colour and shape are very simple yet create a bold and lasting effect, equally i like the absence of colour in some of their work just as much as colour. i find that it can be just as effective if not more in some cases.
In this workshop we were also introduced to InDesign. This was necessary for me as i had never used this software before. We were shown how to use the basic tools to create a body of work. We experimented with the shape tools and colour especially, this helped me grasp the general way in which you create an idea on screen.
Homework Task:
Week 2's Homework task was to create a document in InDesign of opposites. we were to create a list of words that have opposite meanings for example 'up' and 'down' , 'Square' and 'Round' etc. Then we should choose a few of those pairs and visually represent them in indesign.

Homework Task:
Week 2's Homework task was to create a document in InDesign of opposites. we were to create a list of words that have opposite meanings for example 'up' and 'down' , 'Square' and 'Round' etc. Then we should choose a few of those pairs and visually represent them in indesign.
My experiment used the pairs 'Large' & 'Small", 'Monotonous' & 'Interesting' and 'Inside' & 'Outside". For Large & Small i decided to simply use large bold text for the word 'Large' and for the word 'small' i used a very very small size that allowed it to fit inside one of the letters to represent the vast change in size. For the second pair of words i decided to use the tools for the text to distort and transform them slightly while also using colour that represents the connotations of those words. i kept the word 'monotonous' rather simple and plain while making the word 'interesting' multicoloured and eye catching. the last pair of words that i decided to were more difficult to create. For the words 'inside' and 'outside' i thought that i could quite literally create and inside and outside barrier in which i used the colour black and white to symbolise either the outside or the inside shape. as you can see in the experiment i found this one the most difficult to create and execute professionally. Not only did this task help me get to know and understand Indesign and photoshop software but it also encouraged me to be more creative and think beyond my initial ideas.
